Preparing for the Winter? Try These Helpful Heating Tips

Getting your heating system ready for the winter is a big task. But with the right tips, you can do it easily. Last winter was the worst time of the year for my family. Our heating system broke down and left the home freezing cold. We actually created our problem because we didn't check our furnace for issues in the fall. By the time the temperatures dropped a few months later, it was too late to repair the furnace. Instead, we had to replace it. My blog helps you avoid this problem. I offer tips on how to prepare your heating system for the upcoming winter, as well as maintenance tips you can use if it breaks down. Thanks for stopping by.

Your home provides you with shelter and protection from everything from weather conditions to people so you want to make sure you keep your home in as good of shape as possible. Your roof, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC system are just a few of the areas of your home that you are going to want to make sure you provide with the right maintenance. As far as your HVAC system goes, annual servicing is a must in order to prevent unnecessary and possibly costly issues. Here are things you should know about this type of maintenance:

HVAC systems can become overworked

Your HVAC system is designed to be a well-oiled machine that heats and cools your home efficiently when everything is working right. When the temperature rises and you want your home to feel nice and cool, you turn on the system and before you know it your home will feel relaxing and much cooler than the outdoors.

There are a lot of things that can cause the system to become overworked. When things aren't right, the system can completely breakdown so it won't work at all, it can continue working while putting too much stress on some of the components, or it can keep working while also raising your electric bill or causing other problems like water damage.

Parts in the system can become worn and cause more stress to be put on other parts until something finally breaks and the whole system stops working. Leaks can happen and this can cause the system to keep working hard to achieve a temperature it won't be able to until your energy bills become outrageous and your system freezes or breaks. Drains can clog and water can overflow, causing the system to shut down until the problem is resolved.

Maintenance can prevent problems or catch them early

When a technician comes out to provide your system with servicing and routine maintenance, which should be done once a year, it can keep things running correctly much longer and catch small issues that can be easily fixed to prevent major breakdowns. Some things done during these routine visits include:

  • Cleaning of condenser coils

  • Checking and charging refrigerant

  • Testing of controls, contacts, capacitors, and relays

  • Inspection of wiring

  • Testing of temperature output

  • Testing and calibration of thermostat

  • Lubrication as needed

  • Inspection of belts and hoses

  • Inspection of drain and cleaning as necessary

  • Inspection and cleaning of motor

  • Checking of the voltage and amp

  • Checking of air filter and replacement as needed

Conclusion

Skipping the annual air conditioning maintenance can be a very costly mistake that you will want to do your best to avoid.
